As in the whole world, there is an increasing number of elderly people in Türkiye. It's shown that there are no significant differences in the solutions and practices introduced in the approach to the issue in developed and developing countries. Besides, as the level of development increases, it has been realized that the improvement of the elderly means improvement for the whole society and great progress has been made in this respect. Like other countries, studies related to this field have been carried out scientifically in various universities, state, or private institutions in Türkiye for years, because it is one of the basic subjects of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
More information about usAging is an irreversible process in which many changes are experienced together. It encompasses all the irreversible structural and functional changes that occur with the progression of time at the level of cells, tissues, organs and systems in the organism. The World Health Organization has defined aging as "a decrease in the ability to adapt to environmental factors." In another definition, aging has been expressed as a phase experienced with period-specific problems such as loss in physical and cognitive activities, decrease in the productive role, bond between people and life satisfaction, and loss of health. With the developments in science and technology, the improvements in environmental conditions, the discovery of new drugs and treatment methods and the solution of many health problems, many people have the chance to live until advanced ages. Thus, the proportion of the elderly population in the society has started to increase and the population has started to age. As of 2020, approximately 727 million people aged 65 and over were reported to be living worldwide. It is predicted that this figure will more than double and reach over 1.5 billion by 2050. While the share of the elderly in the global population was 9.3% in 2020, this rate is expected to rise to 16% in 2050. This means that in the middle of the current century, one out of every 6 people in the world will be 65 years of age or older.
